Please join the History Department for the semi-annual Vincent P. DeSantis Lecture. Dr. Stephen Sloan, who is Professor of History, Director of the Institute for Oral History at Baylor University, and the Executive Director of the national Oral History Association, will deliver a lecture titled "Examining our Evidence: Interrogating the Sources of History and Oral History." The lecture will take place in 442 DECIO from 4:00-5:00 PM on Friday, November 3rd, 2023. A reception will follow on the fourth floor of Decio Hall. The lecture is open to all and registration is not required.

Professor Sloan holds a Ph.D. in US History from Arizona State University. His books include the co-edited Oral History and the Environment: Global Perspectives on Climate, Connection, and Catastrophe (2022), The United States in Global Perspective: A Primary Source Reader (2020), Tattooed on My Soul: Texas Veterans Remember World War II (2015), and Listening on the Edge: Oral History and Crisis (2014). His current projects include Oral History at a Distance (2024) and Oral History for Public Historians (2025). Dr. Sloan has also published on oral history methodology in a host of journals such as The Oral History Review, Sound Historian: The Journal of the Texas Oral History Association, and Innovative Higher Education.

Dr. Sloan’s scholarship, teaching and service has garnered several awards including the Governor's Award for Historic Preservation (2022), Award of Merit, Texas Historical Commission (2020), the Elizabeth B. Mason Oral History Project Award (2018), and the Book Award, Oral History Association (2015) for Listening on the Edge: Oral History in the Aftermath of Crisis.
