Ian Storey

Ian Storey is a Ph.D. candidate in History. His dissertation focuses on the collapsing political situation of fourteenth-century Byzantium's frontiers. The project has a particular eye to how local lords and civic groups in these borderlands negotiated their power in a constantly changing world and how the remaining interior Byzantine lands developed into frontier zones prior to the Ottomans. Aside from his dissertation, Ian is working on a translation of Byzantine Emperor John VI Kantakouzenos' Histories, one of the two major historical writings of the Byzantine mid-fourteenth century.

 

Outside of Byzantium, Ian is interested more broadly in Medieval Mediterranean and European history, as well as pre-modern historical writing. He has taught courses on ancient and medieval world history at St. Mary's College, prizing students' engagement with primary source material drawn from history, poetry, art, and literature.

 

Ian holds an M.St. in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies from the University of Oxford and a BA in History and Classical Languages from Sewanee: The University of the South.
