Jaime Pensado

Jaime Pensado grew up in Mexico City and studied Latin American History in Los Angeles and Chicago. He taught at Lehigh University before coming to Notre Dame in Fall 2008, where he also serves as a Fellow of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, as a Fellow of the Institute for Latino Studies, and as the Director of the Mexico Working Group.

 

Pensado’s main interests include modern Latin American history with a particular emphasis in student politics, youth culture, the Cold War, Catholicism, and the Global Sixties in Mexico. He is currently working on a critical anthology with selected primary sources on the Global Sixties in Latin America, an edited volume on Catholicism and the Cold War in Latin America, and a new monograph that will examine the role of intellectuals, artists, and countercultural figures in the emergence and demise of the “New Left” in Mexico with a particular focus on the interconnections between humor, sexuality, literature, the arts, and politics.

 

Pensado teaches a variety of courses that include: Latin American History through Film, Art and Revolution in Mexico, Che Guevara and Frida Kahlo, the Global Sixties, and Student Activism and State Repression as well as more specialized graduate seminars on the Global Sixties, the Cold War, Mexico, and Modern Latin America.
