Daniel Hobbins

Biography

Daniel Hobbins is a historian of high and late medieval Europe, with a particular interest in the cultural, religious, and intellectual history of the period from 1000 to 1500. In the broadest terms, his work attempts a reappraisal of the late medieval centuries, traditionally regarded as a period in decline. His research has focused on Jean Gerson, Joan of Arc, authorship, manuscript culture, textual transmission, the Carthusian order, and fifteenth-century France.

His book Authorship and Publicity before Print (Penn Press, 2009) received the Jacques Barzun Prize from the American Philosophical Society. He has also edited and translated The Trial of Joan of Arc (Harvard, 2005). He is currently completing a book on the history and meaning of the authorial colophon.

Hobbins welcomes applications from graduate students with interests in high and late medieval cultural, religious, and intellectual history.
