Emilie Bowerman

Biography

Emilie L. Bowerman is a third-year PhD student at the University of Notre Dame specializing in early medieval Mediterranean and European history. Her research focuses on the Iberian Peninsula, and her interests lie at the intersection of social history, cultural-religious history, and liturgical studies. Currently, Emilie is pursuing a project examining the development of penitential thought and practice on the Iberian Peninsula between ca. 400 and ca. 1080 CE. Before coming to Notre Dame, Emilie completed her undergraduate A.B. degree at Dartmouth College, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2023. Emilie is now the Gabriel Fellow in Notre Dame’s Medieval Institute, and she has received numerous other fellowships, scholarships, and awards over the years to support her research. These include a Critical Language Scholarship from the U.S. Department of State in 2025 for overseas Arabic study. Emilie is excited to continue researching and teaching about the transition from the ancient to the medieval world during the remainder of her time at Notre Dame.
