This talk is part of a yearlong interdisciplinary colloquium, entitled Writing Empire: Rome and Byzantium, in honor of our late colleague and friend Sabine MacCormack, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., Professor of Arts and Letters. The colloquium explores the rich literary, political, and religious cultures of the Roman and Byzantine empires.
