Heather Lane is a PhD candidate in American History at the University of Notre Dame. Her
dissertation is a comparative study of policing in Philadelphia, Chicago, and San Francisco,
focusing on the contrast between ideals and daily practice in these departments. In doing so, it
touches on many of her research interests—gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, class
dynamics in America and the long nineteenth century. She also has a strong interest in the
function and practice of religion in daily life, and in Reconstruction.
