He is broadly interested in the history of modern European political culture, bureaucratization, and the expanding purview of state authority. His research focuses on the constitutional and political history of central Europe, particularly the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states.
Profile
John Deak is new to Notre Dame. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 2009. He is currently working on a book manuscript that examines the interplay of democratic development and bureaucratic authority in the Habsburg Empire and the Austrian First Republic.
Teaching
In his first year at Notre Dame, he is teaching courses on German History, the Revolutions of 1848, the idea and practice of history, and The History Workshop—a course for undergraduate majors.
