History Department Essay Awards

Author: Morgan Lee

We are pleased to announce the Department of History's annual prize competition for the best essays by History majors.  We encourage you to think seriously about entering this year's contest, and we also urge you to discuss with your professors the ways you might improve class papers before submitting them for consideration. Below are the award opportunities:

Monsignor Francis A. O'Brien Award (best research paper by a history major); due Friday, May 1, 2015

This prize honors a superior research paper rooted in primary sources and written during the current academic year.  It is designed especially for papers written in Department Seminars (but any research paper of at least fifteen pages is eligible).

O'Hagan Award (best essay or thesis in Irish history by a history major); due Friday, May 1, 2015

This prize honors a superior essay on any topic of Irish history, whether a research paper, a historiographic essay, a book review, or a topical paper.

Rev. Marvin R. O'Connell Award (best History Workshop paper) {nominations made by History Workshop professors}

This prize honors the best paper written in the History Workshop during the current academic year.

Senior Honors Thesis Award (best senior honors thesis by a history major); due Wednesday, April 15, 2014

Submission details will be sent to HHP students in a separate email.

Winners of each prize receive a certificate, $150, and recognition at the various end-of-year graduation ceremonies.  At the latest, the department will announce the winners of all but the O’Connell Award by Friday, May 15, at the senior reception for graduating history majors.

Submissions for the O’Brien and O’Hagan Prizes are due by hardcopy submission in the Department of History office (219 O’Shaughnessy Hall).  Please include three paper copies of your essay (do not include your name on any of these pages) along with a separate cover sheet with your name, class year, and award(s) for which you are submitting the entry.

If you are currently abroad, please send your submission as an email attachment to Ms. Morgan Lee at mlee32@nd.edu
