Olivia Remie Constable was a beloved professor of medieval history and the Robert M. Conway director of the Medieval Institute at the University of Notre Dame. She taught in the History department at Columbia University for six years after receiving her PhD in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University in 1989; she then moved to the History department at the University of Notre Dame in 1995. She has published Trade and Traders in Muslim Spain: The Commercial Realignment of the Iberian Peninsula 900-1500 (Cambridge University Press, 1994), which won the John Nicholas Brown Prize from the Medieval Academy of America; Medieval Iberia: Readings from Christian, Muslim, and Jewish Sources (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1997; second edition 2011); and Housing the Stranger in the Mediterranean World: Lodging, Trade, and Travel in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Cambridge University Press, 2003). Remie Constable was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the recipient of fellowships from the NEH, the ACLS, and the Guggenheim Foundation, and she was named a fellow of the Medieval Academy of America in 2009.

The History Department would like to extend our deepest sympathies on the passing of Professor Constable.  She has left an impressive legacy we will do our best to uphold. Professor Constable will be sorely missed by all.
