José-Juan López-Portillo was born in Mexico City and grew up in Italy and England. As an undergraduate he read Ancient and Modern History at New College in the University of Oxford and graduated with a first class degree. He was awarded his PhD in 2012 with the dissertation entitled: ‘Another Jerusalem’: Political Legitimacy and Courtly Government in the Kingdom of New Spain 1535-1568.
